Silverlight-A Closer Look

Hi Friends

In my last post i introduced you to Silverlight, Microsoft's latest technology which is used to create Rich Internet Applications. Today I will be talking about why silverlight is important.

Why Silverlight?

The web was invented as a system that allowed static documents to be stored on a web server and linked. The capability of HMTL tags is limited. Trying to draw a line, use animation, or play a movie with plain HTML is difficult or impossible with HTML alone. Over the years CSS and Javascript were added to basic HTML pages, but the user experience was not comparable with desktop applications. Today’s web applications require a richer user experience. SilverLight provides a means of creating Rich Internet Applications.

Silverlight Architecture

Base-Class Library (BCL) provides classes for collections, reflection, regular expressions, string handling and data access. The networking support in Silverlight can be used by Silverlight applications to communicate using HTTP, or at the lower socket level. Cross-domain communication is supported. A Python interpreter in Silverlight 2 hosted in Mozilla FirefoxSilverlight 2 includes the Dynamic Language Runtime (DLR) which allows dynamic compilation and execution of dynamic (scripting) languages. With the integration of .NET Framework, Silverlight also allows HTML-managed code interaction, which enables the manipulation of HTML elements from managed code, and permits JavaScript code to call managed code and use objects instantiated by managed code.

Important Components of Silverlight

Silverlight Framework consists of following components
Input – Handling input from devices like keyboard, mouse, stylus etc.
UI core – Managing rendering of bitmap images (including compressed raster images like JPEG), vector graphics, text and animations.
Media – Playback of MP3, WMA, AVI Standard, media streams.
XAML – To allow the UI layout to be created using XAML markup language.

XAML-> Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML) is a markup language for declarative application programming. Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) implements a Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML) loader and provides Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML) language support for Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) types such that you can create the majority of your application UI in Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML) markup.

How Silverlight Works?

- A Silverlight application starts by invoking the Silverlight control from the HTML page, which then loads up a XAML file.

- The XAML file contains a Canvas object, which acts as placeholder for other elements.

- Silverlight provides various geometrical primitives like lines, ellipses and other shapes, to elements like text, images, and media etc.

- The elements are properly positioned to achieve the desired layout. Any arbitrary shape can be created as well.

- These elements can be animated using Event triggers; some animation effects are predefined, others can be created as composite of the pre-defined effects.

- Events like keyboard or mouse movements can also raise Events which can be handled by custom scripts

Silverlight - Integrating Design and Development

Generally there is a communication mismatch between different roles e.g. A designer is concerned about the look, design, appearance of an application where as a developer is concerned about the security, management, performance of an applicaton irrespective of its looks and feel.

Since XAML is a declarative application programming language which provides a Canvas which acts as a placeholder for various elements so a designer and a developer can work simultaneously and in real time aware of the interface. Hence the performance as well as the richness of the application is improved.

NIIT has come up with some new programs to provide training on Silverlight. To know more about these programs plz visit your nearest NIIT centre.

Digital Signature

A digital signature is an encoded signage which is used instead of an actual handwritten signature. It provides authenticity and security to a message in an online document. A message can be any kind of data: an electronic mail, a contract, an online form, etc. You can also add a digital signature to messages encoded with protocols that are more complicated. digital signatures are mainly useful for programs on the internet which transfer data local machine requiring to conform its identity to conform its identity to any third party concern.

Wireless Security: TKIP or AES?

Wireless home network security can be complex. The Wi-Fi security standards have changed over the last several years. The Wi-Fi alliance developed WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) with TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) technology as a makeshift for Wi-Fi standard WEP in the year 2003. WPA is flexible with older hardware and usually, an update is necessary. Wi-Fi alliance developed another technology known as WPA2 a year later, which uses the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) technology and requires modern hardware. WPA and WPA2 both have a good security, but the later along with AES technology offer a better choice. The loophole for both WPA and WPA2 is a weak password. Once security is properly carried out hackers and Wi-Fi, freeloaders are blocked, but care has to be taken to abstain from harmful websites and malicious e-mails.

Simplifying Boot Process

When the computer is switched on, a small computer programme runs a basic test on all the essential hardware to ensure that it is functions properly.
Afterwards, it wakes up the motherboard and hard disk and calls the system files of the operating system as it is the part of the boot procedure. The operating system will then take over from the boot file and load all the required system files and driver software for the hardware. After all the required files are loaded through this process then the operating system is ready to use.

Create a Podcast

What a podcast really means, It means "Distribute (multimedia files) over the internet for playback on a mobile device or a personal computer" i.e.-A sound file distributed by a podcasting server.

To get started, sign up for a Gcast account(www.gcast.com) with a password and a four digit PIN. Once the site assigns you a URL, recording a podcast is no more difficult than leaving a message on a friend's voice mail.

you simply dial(from ur Phone)the toll free number, enter your pin (Gcast recognizes your account via caller ID), wait fir the beep, and then start speaking. Afterward, you can go to your Gcast site and edit the podcast's properties to make it easy for people to find.

WiMax

Wimax(Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access ) is a telecommunication technology aimed at providing wireless data over long distances from point to point services to cellular types. It is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard, which is also called Wireless LAN. With wireless high speed broadband connectivity for your PC, Wimax enabled laptops and mobile devices provide you the freedom to connect to the internet just as you do with your cell phone service, anywhere, anytime sans roaming charges(again!). with speeds similar to DSL or Cable and faster than using your cell phone service to connect, WiMAX allows you to access all data-intensive applications, including streaming media on the internet, live video-conferencing, mobile TV and much more while on the move.

Some more great application of WiMAX.......
It can deliver larger amount of bandwidth(upto 10 mbps practically)

PSP: The multimedia monster

The playstation portable(psp) is a handheld game comsole manufactured by Sony computer Entertainment. In 2004, the psp became the first handheld video game console to use an optical disc format called Universal Medai disc(UMD). Other distinguished features of the console includes its large viewing screen, robust multimedia capabilities, and wireless connectivity with the playStation 3, other PSPs, and the Internet.
A remodeled, similar, and lighter version of the playstation portable 2004, was launched in the early september 2007. The redesign also features composite TV output, supports charging via USB, double the onboard RAM(64 MB), and a brighter screen. It also caches UMD data in memory to reduce game load time.

GAMING:: the psp system's list with over 350 titles already includes the ultimate in portable games with the new offerings like 'God of war-Chains of Olympus' and 'Final Fantasy-Crysis Core'.Most of the time you are engrossed with the single player mode but this is not the limit. In multiplayer, you can play with people online, or play with nearby PSP system with out am internet commection.

WACHING MOVIES::You can watch movies on its superb widescreen 480x272 size LCD which can display 16 million colors. You can also connect the PSP to a TV and watch movies using the TV-Out cable. Videos can also be copied on its memory stick from a PC or Streamed from a PS3 or the internet.

LISTENING TO MUSIC:: The PSP is also a music player with equalization, visualization and the sound quality ia also exceptional. it has got onboard stereo speakers but sound even better with headphones. It plays MP3s,WAVs, WMAs, ATRAC3+ and MP4. With the addition of internet radio.

Wi-fi and Internet:: The new PSP has Wi-fi built in, which you can use to do lots of fun stuff. you can directly enable WLAN and start playing games with other PSPs nearby without fiddling arounf with confusing settings. you can play with upto 16 connected PSPs at a single time! And if you are at a Wi-fi hotspot, you can go online and play a multiplayer game with people anywhere in the world. You can also browse the web, download music and videos and stay up-to-the-minute with your blogs, podcasts and news feeds.

Computer Security : some people just don't take it seriously enough

Security software comparison across the globe are strictly working towards improving their software to battle hackers. Software giant Symantec corporation has released statistics which state that the majority of people-while aware of the need for security software-do not take serious action. Since many people are not tech-savvy, they prefer not to understand the dynamic of security software.
Tom Powledge, vice president of Symantec, told that 25% of computer users are mature, secure and concerned about security. However, 32% are completely seamless and automatic, for example digital families in which parents are concerned about their childrens' security online. A further 22% are aware of security but don't really care much about it. they prefer to accept whatever security software is bundled with their computer. Finally 21 percent are technically savvy enough to recommend technology products to people who are less aware.
Further consumers complain that security software is too heavy for their PCs; installation takes forever, and the software makes PC sluggish. "There is a perception that security software slows down the computer. And in past it's fair to say that this is true".

How computer users relate to security software::
22%--Accept anything
21%--Recommend to others
25%--Secure & Concern
32%--Ignorant And in need

Rejoice for the fan of XP

Xp has got a new and rather long lease of life until 2014. Thsi seemed unlikely till recently till recently, as Microsoft seemed hell-bent on following the earlier plan of going with support for only one single OS.
According to the roadmap for introducing a new iteration of windows, XP was supposed to be phased out by the mid-2008. As an OS from Microsoft, XP had proved to be the most stable, most useful and best to have ever come out of redmond. when Microsoft announced work on Vista, enterprises and private customers expected a better product. However, VISTA turned out to be a disaster. it was pretty to look at , but demanded insane hardware spaces for what it did. to rub salt in users' wounds also plagued by compatibility issues and security threats. The fiasco with vista has now led to a popular term called "Vistaster".
Microsoft suffered a big blow, because despite its ubiquity(The state of being everywhere at once) in the personal computing space, the enterprise segment with volume licensing and long software deals was essential what brought home the bacon. Business were edgy because they feared non-existent support for XP would affect their operations while Microsoft feared that it would lose its customers to Linux or Apple, whosse stock was rising. the masses were also rising, with an internet petition collecting hundreds of thousends of signatures as the doomsday clock ticket.Meanwhile people choose to swim towards the the drowning ship, opting to downgrade from thier vista to xp. In the booming UMPC Segment, XP was not optional, but also essential for Microsoft to get the slice of the pic, as machines like the EeePC did not have the horsepower to run Vista. Microsoft was, for a change, facing competition, not from others, but from an older product of its own.
For a while, it seemed that Microsoft was determined to buck popular opinion and business logic. All the big guys at the top, especially CEO Steve Ballmer proclaimed the end of XP would come to june 30. things looked unchangeable and seemed to be inscribed in stone. As the whole world crossed its collective finger and hoped that Microsoft would not shoot itself in the foot, the company finally read the writing on the wall. the recent move to support XP, means that even though Microsoft would not want to dump vista, they would be forced to let it die a slow death. As it is, the company is engaged in development of a new operating system windows 7, whice is scheduled to be released in 2010. Microsoft hopes to learn from the mistake it made in vista, and so far, the scene looks encouraging. Things would really be bad if microsoft had to extend the licence of XP a second time.

Genuine Microsoft Software

Software developers are fighting back with the new copy protection mechanisms like holograms on disks, online product activation, and validation. Microsoft’s copy –protection schemes for windows and office are called Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) & Office Genuine Advantage (OGA), respectively. You will encounter WGA/OGA notification as you try to install or update any Microsoft Software. WGA not only checks piracy but also offers some benefits to consumers also.

For Microsoft windows
To put in simple terms, Windows Genuine Advantages is Microsoft’s anti-piracy program and a method to authenticate copies of Microsoft software used on computers around the world. The authentication is facilitated by simple online validation procedure.
Before Windows XP Service Pack 2 came along, validation was optional. But if you have updated your windows to SP2, then you will be frequently reminded to validate your copy of windows. A module of WGA notification is responsible for these reminders; this module is installed as one of the WINDOWS Update.

For Microsoft Office
Two months after the Windows Genuine Advantage program was launched, Microsoft announced office Genuine Advantage (OGA). Those using Microsoft Office will be prompted to validate their copies when they try to update the software or while downloading clip arts and templates from the Microsoft Site.
If you want to validate your Copy of office, go to the website http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtell/en/office/default.mspx.

"Silverlight" A Closer Look

On April 15th ,Microsoft unveiled Silverlight at the 2007 National Association of Broadcasters coneference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

What is Silverlight ?Here's what Microsoft says:-

"Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of Microsoft .NET-based media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web"

what this means is:-

1:-A pluggable browser component that will be the key to the power on the client side.

2:-XAML based rendering of interactive 2D and 3D graphics.

3:-Interactive media delivery based on XAML and AJAX.

4:-Powerful programming model based on AJAX with ability to harness the power of
the managed .Net runtime.

5:-Closer to a more desktop like experience even for web applications. Technically,
the Rich Interactive Application experience.

6:-Better UI designing capability, integrated with the .Net development environment
( Visual Studio .Net + Expression).

7:-All the power of .Net code can be harnessed inside the browser which gives rise
to endless possibilities for the developer.
------ ------ ------- -------- ------- ------- ----- ------ ----- ------ ----- -----
Comparison
web 2.0 is a great concept as far as i know about it. but when we talk about Silverlight it has some advantages over Flash(web 2.0) .Though Silverlight is not so

popular as web 2.0 because it is newer to the Market. But the performance impact is more than others like Flash and "DHTML & AJAX".

comparison between silverlight & flash(web 2.0)

1:-Browser Compatibility are same in both cases.
( these are compatible with IE, Firefox, Safari, and other Popular Browsers).
2:-Study Efforts are same i.e. Normal in both cases.
3:-Client Performance is highest in both cases.
4:-The Designer Tools used in Flash are Flash CS3 PhotoShop CS3 and in Silverlight
Designer Tools used are Blend, Expression Designer.

Advantages Over Flash

1:-In case of Network performance Silverlight take advantages over Web 2.0

What Can We Do For You

                   Design

We believe that great design is in the details. We also believe that design must support functionality, and vice versa. One can't,  and shouldn't, be used to overcome the weaknesses of the other. Design is more than just choosing colors, typefaces, shapes, and images. Good design works to present information in such a way as to support the information it presents.vice versa.
